LCMS Principal Update February 9-13, 2015

Dear LCMS Bobcat Family and Friends:

My staff and I wish you and your loved ones a Happy Valentine's Day this Saturday, February 14.
A reminder that Parent Teacher Conferences will be on Tuesday, March 24. From 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., teachers will meet with parents or guardians for scheduled appointments. From 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., parents or guardians are welcomed to drop by and talk to teachers about their child's progress. From Monday, March 9 to Friday, March 20, parents or guardians will be able to sign up to meet with their child's individual teacher.

Within the next couple of weeks, your child's grade-level administrator, his or her grade level guidance counselor, and I will be meet with students one-on-one who need additional supports to see how we can assist them with their academic progress.

I strongly encourage those students who need additional supports to stay for After School Help and to continue their attendance in SOL Boot Camp. We hope that parents or guardians will also sign up for the Parent Teacher Conferences on Tuesday, March 24.

As always, please feel free to contact me at chenlc@lcps.k12.va.us if you have questions, concerns, or any feedback that you would like to share.

The following are some important updates and announcements.

Announcements

Thank you to Morning Announcers – Damond Walker and Lacy White
Thank you to Damond Walker and Lacy White for their assistance with morning announcements. You provided us with important daily news and upcoming events! On February 17, we will have two new guest speakers, Desaray Winston and Alexis Wood. We look forward to these announcements!
Congratulations to Jarett Hunter, Austin Mills, and Kamryn Noel – Student Athletes of the Week
A big shout out to Jarett Hunter, Austin Mills, and Kamryn Noel who were nominated as "Student Athletes of the Week" for their contributions in the classroom and on the field of competition. We are extremely proud of your hard work and efforts!

Drug Education Week
Under the direction of Terry Marks (Director of Middle School Athletics and Department Head of Health and Physical Education) and Officer Nathan Harris, our students learned more about the impact of drugs. Students and teachers in health education classes were engaged in meaningful dialogue about the dangers of drug abuse. Students discussed the following topics: 1) the rise in use of prescription drugs and cough syrup among teens, 2) how drug usage changes the brain and "hijacks" the brain's reward system, and 3) how drugs affect teenagers in risk-taking behaviors. Overall, students learned to make decisions that will keep them healthy, happy, and safe, and to say "No" to drugs. Students also participated in the drug fact contest. Winners of the drug fact test were Kaleigh Cauthorne, Krysten Grymes, Ariana Jackson, Jeremiah Madison, and Steven Wolfe. Student winners were announced on Monday morning during Morning Announcements, and students received gift cards to McDonalds. For more information on how to talk to your teenager about drugs, please see http://www.healthfinder.gov/HealthTopics/Category/parenting/healthy-communication-and-relationships/talk-to-your-kids-about-tobacco-alcohol-and-drugs

Grade 7 Students Visit Holocaust Museum – March 2015
The Grade 7 Social Studies Department will be taking Grade 7 students to the Richmond Holocaust Museum in March. Students will receive a guided tour through the museum to deepen their understanding of the Holocaust. Each Grade 7 Social Studies teacher will take his or her classes to the Holocaust Museum on the designated day as the museum only allows small groups to visit at a time. Students will be participating in a Penny Drive from Monday, February 9 to Friday, March 13 in their social studies classes. Pennies will be donated to the museum as part of its effort to collect 6 million pennies - one penny lost for each Jewish life during the Holocaust. Students in Hope Hamblin's and Ed Heisig's class will visit the museum on Friday, March 13. Nell Stover's class will go on Tuesday, March 17. Ty Boyer's class will visit the museum on Wednesday, March 18, and Beth Brown's class will visit on Thursday, March 19. We look forward to what our students will learn on this field trip. For more information about Penny Drive, please click here: "Penny Drive."

Cell Phone Protocol at LCMS
Please remind your child that cell phones are not allowed during school hours. Should students bring their cell phones to school, it should be turned off, put away, and out of sight. Cell phones should be placed in the students' lockers that are locked. If your child needs to call home, he or she can use the phone in the Main Office. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
