Principal's Update for August 22, 2014

Dear LCMS Bobcat Family and Friends:

Today, while entering LCMS, I saw an Actias luna moth. I quickly learned that these beautiful creatures are indigenous to Louisa from my staff and students. How amazing, and what a great way to start a Friday!

Presently, we are in the midst of auditioning students for the LCMS Morning Announcers, who will be assisting me with delivering important messages every day over the PA system. I am happy to report that Ms. Purcell (Guidance Counselor for Grade 8) and I have auditioned over 75 interested students. We look forward to hearing the first group of our Morning Announcements beginning Monday, August 22. What a great way to begin our school day by listening to our students delivering the Pledge of Allegiance, a Moment of Silence, and other vital messages to our school community.

Much learning has occurred during this week. We further practiced a bus evacuation drill, an earthquake and fire drill, and a lock down drill this week to ensure the safety of all of our students.

As always, please feel free to contact me atchenlc@lcps.k12.va.us if you have questions, concerns, or any feedback that you would like to share.

The following are some important updates and announcements.

Announcements

After our bus evacuation drill on Thursday, August 21, Kenny Forrest (Director of Transportation) as well as the principals and assistant principals of the middle and high schools met with our hard working bus drivers to problem solve and discuss any potential issues on the bus. We discussed the importance of safety and ensuring that school rules are consistent and followed by our students on the bus. If you could please remind your child that school rules extend on the bus as well, we would greatly appreciate your support. Thank you!

Girls’ Soccer Meeting – Wednesday, August 27
For those students in Grades 8 through 12 who are interested in Girls’ Soccer, please come to the LCMS Cafeteria to obtain more information after school. If your child wishes to attend this meeting, your child must have a ride home by 4:30 p.m. If your child is unable to attend this meeting because of transportation issues, please have her inform one of her friends to pick up the information. For questions, please contact Terry Marks @ markstl@lcps.k12.va.us or Nikki Hankinson (Grade 6 Social Studies Teacher and LCHS Assistant Girls’ Soccer Coach at hankinna@lcps.k12.va.us

LCMS Fall Sports Meeting – Wednesday, August 27
Student athletes participating in a LCMS Fall sport should plan on attending the parent meeting on Wednesday, August 27 at 6:00 p.m. in the LCMS Forum. Information and expectations will be shared by the coaches during that time. We look forward to seeing you there!

Dangers of Social Media Presentation –Thursday, August 28
Rusty McGuire, Louisa County Commonwealth's Attorney, will present "Dangers of Social Media: Tips for Parents to Help Keep Kids Safe" in the Louisa County Middle School Forum from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 28.This important presentation was cancelled last year due to inclement weather and ensuing scheduling conflicts. Topics to be covered will include cyberbullying, sexting, and social and legal impacts of online behaviors.

LCMS Wrestling Program Update
The Middle School Wrestling program has grown tremendously over the past few years! In order to build a robust program and to introduce more students to the exciting world of wrestling, this program has added more wrestlers each year. This season will consist of more matches and tournaments with the addition of some great competition. A rotational match schedule has been added that the Richmond Collegiate School has even organized. In this round, LCMS wrestlers will face very competitive teams throughout the Richmond area along with the original scheduled teams in the Louisa district area. This rotation will consist of Richmond Collegiate, New Kent (an elite middle school wrestling program), Dinwiddie, Powhatan, and Benedictine. This is a great opportunity for our student athletes as they will wrestle with the best competitors in the State! Coaches Ty Boyer (Special Education teacher for Grades 6, 7, and 8), Trevor Gallo (Business teacher for Grades 6, 7, and 8), and Dan Leale (Grade 6 Math teacher) are excited about this program, and the potential growth for our future wrestlers at LCMS!

Emergency Drill Practices
Please remind your child that during an earthquake drill, the procedure is to drop and cover regardless of where they are. If a student happens to be in the hallway when the drill occurs, the student should get up against the wall on either side of the hallway, drop, and cover up. If the student is in the bathroom, he or she should do the same thing; that is, to get up against the wall, drop, and cover up.

This procedure is different than the protocol for a fire drill. During a fire drill, a student in the hall should exit the building from the closest exist and inform an adult who he or she is and who his or her teacher is. If the student is in the bathroom, he or she should exit the bathroom and then leave the building and inform an adult who he or she is and who his or her teacher is. We greatly appreciate your support and assistance in reviewing these procedures with your child as practicing these drills ensures the safety of your child and others.

Hearing and Vision Check for Grade 7 Students  – Wednesday, August 27 andThursday, August 28
Per State requirements and to ensure students’ well-being, hearing and vision checks will be conducted on students by the nurse on Wednesday, August 27 andThursday, August 28.

LCMS Food Protocol
To ensure the safety of all students, LCMS has established food protocols when food is being used in the classroom as some of our students are allergic to certain foods. The LCMS Food Protocol entails that lesson plans are sent in to the principal two weeks prior to the lesson and checked off by the nurse and the principal. A letter is further sent home to parents including the foods being used. An alternative assignment is provided to those students who are allergic to such foods.

Regarding students wishing to bring in cupcakes to share during lunch only, parents should include a list of ingredients and to whom the cupcakes will be distributed two days before the student wishes to bring in their cupcakes. This will allow the nurse the appropriate amount of time to check through the ingredients and to ensure that the students receiving those cupcakes are not allergic to those ingredients. Once approved, the nurse will contact the parent, and the student should drop off their cupcakes in the Main Office that morning. That student can then pick up his or her cupcakes on his or her way to lunch to distribute them during lunch.

It is critically important to abide by these protocols so that the nurse will have the appropriate time to check the ingredients and the list of students as some students may be allergic to the ingredients. Failure to abide to this timeline will result in your child not being able to distribute his or her cupcakesWe need your assistance please in this area because we want our students to have the opportunity to share their cupcakes, while at the same time we need to ensure that all students are safe when consuming them.

ACE Block, ELL Programming, TAG Programming, and Clubs
This week, students have been involved with taking a series of pre-tests to ensure appropriate placement and to assist teachers in planning for instruction for classroom instruction and ACE Block, which occurs at the last period of the day. This year, students will have the opportunity to receive additional help and acquire essential writing and reading skills during ACE Block.

Programs for students whose first language is not English (ELL Program) and for those students who are involved in the gifted and talented program (TAG Program) will occur in mid to late September. More information about these programs will be forthcoming.

Students will also have the opportunities to sign up for clubs in September. As the time approaches, students will be informed about these clubs.

Principal Update for August 15, 2014

Dear LCMS Bobcat Family and Friends:

We have had a really smooth beginning of the year. Students have been involved in getting acclimated to their classes, meeting their new teachers, and learning more about teacher expectations. I had the opportunity to see at least 40 classrooms, and students are engaged with learning!

This week, my administrative team, staff, and I further met with all of our students to review safety rules as well as school incentives. Today, we practiced our first fire drill. Students exited out of the building quietly and quickly, and did an outstanding job.

Further, be sure to ask your son or daughter about their syllabi by the end of next week so that you too are familiar with the grading procedures, expectations, and protocols of your child’s class.

With such a strong beginning, I know that our students will be afforded with much knowledge, skills, and opportunities!

As always, please feel free to contact me at chenlc@lcps.k12.va.us if you have questions, concerns, or any feedback that you would like to share.

The following are some important updates and announcements.

Announcements

School Assemblies  - “Be Fully Engaged” and “Never Give Up”
On Thursday, August 14 and Friday, August 15,  LCMS staff, Assistant Principals (Robbie Garnes, Nick LeReche, and Joel Rupert), and I met with all of our students to welcome them back to Louisa County Middle School and to share with them our message of “being fully engaged” and “never give up.” At these assemblies, we also reviewed with our students important expectations, rules, and positive incentives, such as “Be on Target.”

We shared with our students the story of billionaire Sara Blakely, who reminds all of us of an important lesson that she had learned as a child. According to her, “ ‘My dad encouraged us to fail. Growing up, he would ask us what we failed at that week. If we didn’t have something, he would be disappointed. It changed my mindset at an early age that failure is not the outcome. Failure is not trying. Don’t be afraid to fail.’ ”

Throughout the year, we will be sharing this message with all of our students. It is with this mindset that our students will be even stronger and more resilient in a world that is fast paced and changing.

Congratulations to Gracie Quarles (Department Chair of Family and Consumer Sciences)
Please join me in congratulating Gracie Quarles on receiving the Carl Perkins Service Award, representing the Virginia Association for Teachers of Family and Consumer Sciences (VATFACS) and  the Virginia Association for Career and Technical Education (VACTE). Gracie Quarles will be recognized as the State winner during the ACTE Region II Conference on Wednesday, September 27 in Richmond, Virginia. We are extremely proud of her contributions to our students and to her vision in the Family and Consumer Sciences department! Thank you Gracie Quarles for your years of contribution to teaching and learning at LCPS.

The Wrestling Program at LCMS
We hope that your children will also try out for the LCMS Wrestling Program. We are excited to have the following coaches for this program:

Ty Boyer, Special Education teacher for Grades 6, 7, and 8, has been involved with wrestling since age 4. He wrestled in Pennsylvania throughout elementary, middle, and high school. He was a district and regional qualifier. Ty Boyer coached high school wrestling throughout college and was the middle school assistant coach for the Louisa Bobcats in the 2013-2014 wrestling season.

Trevor Gallo, Business teacher for Grades 6, 7, and 8, has been in love with the sport of wrestling since he was 7. He started wrestling in a small town named Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania. At Slippery Rock High School, he was a three-time State Placer, finishing 3rd his senior year. After high school, he went to college at Mercyhurst University, where he received a scholarship for wrestling. In 2008, he qualified for the Division 2 National Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. After graduating from Mercyhurst University, Trevor Gallo went on to graduate school at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). While in school, he spent his next two years coaching at the high school level for Butler High School and Kittanning High School in Pennsylvania. Last year, Trevor Gallo moved his teaching and coaching career to Louisa County, where he was the middle school coach with Coach Boyer. He is very excited to be helping out the Louisa Wrestling Program.

Dan Leale, Grade 6 Math teacher, has been involved with wrestling since the age of 5. He wrestled in Pennsylvania growing up and continued his wrestling at Lycoming College, a premier Division 3 school. After completing college, Dan Leale moved to Louisa to take the head varsity wrestling job for 5 years. He then started the program at Deep Run High School, where he was the head varsity coach for 10 years. Under his leadership, the Wildcats won over 250 matches, won 5 district titles, and had numerous state champions and place winners. Coach Leale is now back to help the Louisa Wrestling Program grow at all levels, from the youth level where he started to the high school starters.

We hope that your children will come to learn from these experienced gentlemen, who have had many years of wrestling experience! It is without doubt that these three men will take Louisa County to the next level in the sport of wrestling.

Principal's Update for August 11, 2014

Dear LCMS Bobcat Family and Friends:

It is hard to believe that in two more days, my staff and I will see your children. I am so excited! Much has happened since I last wrote to you. I visited my first ever Agricultural Fair and Stuff the School Bus. At the county fair, I felt very much like a tourist as I took several pictures of pigs, cows, sheep, goat, chickens, and lawn mowers. I did not know that pigs could be so large, and cows could have such a healthy sheen. At the Stuff the School Bus event, I worked with students, community members, staff, and Louisa Education Foundation members to provide our students with school supplies. I had my first ever Open House on August 8, and I am happy to report that it went extremely well.

I continue to be amazed by the heart and love that define Louisa County. It is with heart, dedication, and drive that we will propel LCMS to its next level, and I look forward to working with you and your children throughout this school year.

As always, please feel free to contact me at chenlc@lcps.k12.va.us if you have questions, concerns, or any feedback that you would like to share.

The following are some important updates and announcements.

MathCounts
This year, we will be offering MathCounts again, which is ideal for Grade 6, Grade 7, and Grade 8 students who have a talent and passion for math and who enjoy a challenge! General club members will collaborate with their peers using challenging scenarios. Students should expect to see and learn content they are not yet familiar with and must be willing to take on the added responsibility of working on material that is outside of their regular grade-level math curriculum. For those students who choose to compete, club members will have the opportunity to complete against other students at the local, regional, and possibly state or national level. The MathCounts Club will meet every Club Friday (approximately once per month) during school hours (ACE block). Attendance is not mandatory. For students who join (or think they may want to join) the competition series, meetings will take place weekly on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Attendance is mandatory for those who wish to compete, and students will need to have transportation at the school by 5:45 p.m. or may ride the activity bus home. The school/local chapter competitions will take place in December 2014 and/or January 2015. The regional competition has taken place on a Saturday during February in years past. Specific dates for these competitions will be announced. For more information, please contact Kristina Dragland at draglakl@lcps.k12.va.us
